NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 2- Esteemed former Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Secretary-General Dr. Al-Hajj Adan Wachu was on Monday sworn in as the National Heroes Council chairperson, following his recent appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He took his oath of office in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice David Maraga at the Supreme Court of Kenya.
Dr. Wachu was sworn in alongside other council members.
They include legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, freedom fighter Gitu wa Kahengeri,2019 Global teacher prize winner Peter Tabichi and Beatrice Gachegu.
The Attorney General or his designated representative will also be sitting in the council.
Former Ambassador Yvonne Khamati will serve as the council’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The appointments were made in adherence to the Kenya Heroes Act, which was passed in 2014, but only established this year following the appointments.
The Council has its mandate cut out in the Act which will include formulating and implementing policy relating to national heroes.
They will also be mandated with identifying and recommending national heroes for presidential recognition, establish and oversee the management of the national heroes’ square and oversee the design and creation of appropriate commemorative items for purposes of honouring national heroes.
The council will also have the mandate of nominating national heroes posthumously and even naming key landmarks and streets/roads after national heroes.
Further, the Council, will have custody and oversee the management of properties and institutions relating to heroes among other duties.
