The Pastoralist Parliamentary Group legislators held a lunch meeting at a Nairobi Hotel under the leadership of Majority leader National Assembly Aden Duale (Garissa Township MP) who is also the current Patron of PPG caucus received biting drought situation report in in Northern counties which are predominantly inhabited by the pastoralist communities. Hon. Duale was accompanied by Isiolo Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Senate Hon. Dullo, PPG Chairman Hon. Alois Lentoimanga (MP Samburu North), Isiolo County Woman Representative Hon. Rehema Jaldesa, Hon. Junet Mohamed (MP Suna East), Hon. Chachu Ganya (MP North Horr) among others.
The legislators received National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) report on the drought situations in the regions. The NDMA has reported alarming drought situation in these areas with the most affected being Isiolo, Wajir, Baringo, Garissa, Marsabit, West Pokot, Mandera and Samburu counties among others.
Owing to failure of expected rain during the months of April – May in over 10 counties there is serious scarcity of water, food and pasture for the people and the livestock. They have crossed inter counties and stretching to neighbouring countries in search of water and pasture. During the meeting , the leaders asked the National, County Government and international donors to come to the aid of the people affected by the drought by providing food, water trucking, livestock off-take Programme.
Most of the pastoralists counties have been overwhelmed by the harsh drought. Reports of people starving and animals dying have been captured in these regions.
They also discussed the coming census vis-a-vis the National drought in our regions and asked the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to consider more time allocated to the census in the region.
They further thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointing CS Amb. Ukur Yatani as acting Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury which is a rare feat for the people of Northern Kenya. The pastoralist caucus said the appointment is a show of trust to their kinsman. They noted that CS Yattani was well qualified and equal to the task, calling upon President Kenyatta to appoint him as a substantive cabinet secretary at the Treasury.
Pastoralist Parliamentary Group reiterated that the northern Kenya region had long been marginalized in terms of resources and state appointments, but the trend has been exponentially changing. They pledged to support the President and the government in the push to implement the big four agenda and the fight against graft.
